Could defeat Left due to Trinamool: Pranab
The new government would speed up the development process in the state, Mukherjee claimed.

Basanti: Taking on his detractors in the West Bengal, who are against the alliance with Trinamool Congress, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday said that the Congress needs the TC to defeat the Left Front in the state.

"My detractors are saying that I have sold the Congress to Mamata Banerjee's TC. In the 2009 Lok Sabha election the Left Front could only win 15 out of the 42 seats in West Bengal because we had an alliance with the Trinamool Congress

in the parliamentary election," Mukherjee told an election rally here in South 24 Parganas district.

"I am confident that the Congress-TC alliance would come to power in the assembly elections and Mamata Banerjee would become the new chief minister of West Bengal, the senior Congress leader said.

The new government would speed up the development process in the state and would also bring peace and prosperity to the state, Mukherjee claimed.

West Bengal was lagging behind many states in the field of education, health care, industry and infrastructure development due to the "misrule" of the Left Front during its 34-year rule, he said.

The Union Finance minister also said that after the devastating cyclone Aila which hit the South 24 Parganas district, "I had sanctioned Rs 1,000 crore to the West Bengal government for relief and rehabilitation of the cyclone

affected people but the state government failed to properly utilise the money."

Murshidabad Congress strongman Adhir Chowdhury openly campaigned for the four rebel Congress candidates in the district, who contested against the Congress-TC alliance candidates.

In some other districts like Malda, North Dinajpur and Nadia there were some rebel Congress candidates who contested against the official Congress-TC alliance candidates.
