New Delhi: The backdrop of the Congress party’s all-out attack against the BJP’s vice-presidential nominee Venkaiah Naidu said it all. Former Union Minister Jairam Ramesh held a press conference outside Congress party president Sonia Gandhi’s office in Parliament to ask Naidu questions about the tweaking of rules by Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh governments to benefit the veep pick’s family.
This is the first direct attack by the Congress against Naidu, and it came after the BJP chose to criticise the opposition’s V-P pick Gopalkrishna Gandhi on his statement over mercy petitions for terrorists.
Responding to the claims, Naidu maintained that it was just a ploy by the Congress to raise age-old issues. “The allegations are entirely false and are politically motivated. He (Ramesh) has raised issues which were responded to in the past. The fact that these issues have been referred to a few days before the Vice-presidential elections reflects on political motives and mischievous intentions. This is a clear indication of the sense of hopelessness and political bankruptcy within the Congress party,” said Naidu.
“I am a product of a political party and culture that always placed the highest premium on probity in public life and always lived by those standards,” added Naidu.
Sources told CNN-News18 that Sonia Gandhi has instructed her party to go all-out in its attack on Naidu. In days to come the voices are set to become louder. The opposition realises that Narendra Modi chose Naidu to tame the Rajya Sabha – with the former Union minister of Urban Development’s stinging one-liners being the weapon of choice.
