Srinagar: In a shocking and shameful incident, Jammu and Kashmir Independent MLA Engineer Rashid, who hosted a beef party in MLA hostel on Wednesday night, was thrashed by Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs in the state Assembly. Angered by his beef party, BJP MLAs attacked Rashid inside the Assembly on Thursday and beat him up.
Demanding strict action against the BJP MLAs Rashid said, "Behaviour of MLAs is unprecedented and unacceptable. We demand action by the speaker aganist the members responsible for the act. We have to respect everyone's sentiments."
Former chief minister Omar Abdullah condemned the action of BJP MLAs and said everyone's religious sentiments should be respected but violence should not be the answer. "We come here to talk not to beat up anyone. Our religion says drinking liquor is crime , so should I start attacking the people here who drink in the house. We do not impose what our religion says on others," he said.
BJP has brought a resolution demanding capital punishment for those who violate J&K constitution that calls for total ban on beef. Opposition National Conference and a few independent Valley based legislators are demanding scrapping of the archaic act.
Rashid, legislator from Langate, on Wednesday hosted the beef party in the lawns of MLA hostel, with the guests being served beef kebabs, 'ristas' (meat balls) and beef patties.
Rashid had claimed that he did not want to offend anyone but wanted to send a message that "no courts or legislature can prevent the people from eating what they want".
The step was "just to give them (legislators) a clear message that it hardly makes any difference whether you accept or reject the bill. Religious matters cannot be kept subservient to courts and assembly," the MLA had said. "Nobody on earth, no assembly, no court and no institution can stop us from having what we want to have," he added.
