Congress lawmaker Kodikunnil Suresh disqualified by Kerala High Court.

New Delhi: The Kerala High Court on Monday disqualified five-time Lok Sabha MP Kodikunnil Suresh for allegedly producing a fake caste certificate.

Congress leader Suresh, who represents the Mavelikkara constituency reserved for Scheduled Castes, is a Cheramar Christian but he allegedly gave a certificate showing him as a Cheramar Hindu, which is a scheduled caste.

Suresh's opponent in the last Lok Sabha elections told the court the MP was a Christian according to his school-leaving certificate.

Justice G Shashidharan Nambiar, in a 160-page judgment, ruled that Suresh had made conflicting statements about his caste and his nomination should have been rejected on the ground that he is not a member of scheduled caste and hence was not entitled to contest from Mavelikkara. Suresh can appeal against the court order.

Suresh was first elected to Lok Sabha in 1989, then in 1991, 1996 and 1999 from the Adoor constituency. He was defeated in 1998 and 2004 elections.
