Another student died by suicide in Rajasthan’s Kota today, September 28, taking the total number of cases to 26 this year. The deceased has been identified as 20-year-old Mohammad Tanveer, who was self-studying in Kota. He was a resident of Maharajganj, UP. The father of the deceased student was also living with him. His father was a teacher at a coaching institute in Kota. The police have not yet revealed which competitive exam the student was preparing for.

Cases of suicide among students in Kota have risen drastically this year. Last year as many as 15 students died by suicide in the coaching hub of the country. This year, the toll has risen to 26. This is the highest recorded suicide rate reported in the coaching hub over the past eight years. Over two lakh students move to Kota annually to prepare for competitive exams including NEET, JEE, etc.

A few days ago, a 17-year-old girl, who was also preparing for NEET, died by suicide in Kota. The deceased, identified as Priyam Singh, was a resident of Mau in Uttar Pradesh. She had shifted to Kota around one-and-a-half years back to prepare for the medical entrance exam and was living alone on rent at an apartment on Dakania Road, according to the police. The student had consumed poison while returning from the coaching centre, the police had said.

Coaching institutes in Kota had earlier announced the postponement of all exams for two months. The Kota hostel management had also directed all hostels and paying guests (PGs) to install spring-loaded fans and “anti-suicide nets” in the students’ rooms to make them “suicide-proof.”
