The year 2023 was undoubtedly a big year for Bollywood, with the masses witnessing one great spectacle of a film to another. Starting with Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan which minted over Rs 1,000 crores at the box office to Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal which is dominating in the theatres — the Hindi film industry was taken over by several hits. Although the focus mainly lies on the blockbuster successes, there were a few misses too. From Prabhas’ Adipurush to Vidya Balan’s Neeyat, let’s take a look at some of the biggest Bollywood flop movies of 2023 before the year comes to an end.
Adipurush
Film director Om Raut’s Adipurush was one of the most-anticipated films of the year. However, the retelling of the epic Ramayana failed to impress the masses. The factors contributing to Adipurush’s poor performance at the ticket window were below-par visual effects and graphics, imperfect storytelling, cringe-worthy dialogues, and cartoon-like characters like that of Hanuman. On a budget of approximately Rs 700 crores, the Prabhas and Kriti Sanon-starrer minted only Rs 393 crore.
Shehzada
Kartik Aaryan’s charm failed to create magic with director Rohit Dhawan’s action-comedy Shehzada. Starring Kriti Sanon as the female lead, the film revolves around the story of a man named Bantu who finds out one day that his biological parents are different, swearing to protect them at all costs. It was a remake of the 2020 hit Telugu film made on a budget of Rs 65 crore. It only earned Rs 47 crore.
Selfiee
Akshay Kumar has been hit with a series of blows — the actor’s latest film releases are proof. Although the trailer of Raj Mehta’s film Selfiee promised an entertaining ride, the results were not so great. Even a strong cast like Akshay, Emraan Hashmi, Nushrratt Bharuccha, Diana Penty, and Mrunal Thakur could not save the film from drowning. The film was declared a flop collecting Rs 24 crore.
Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan
Headlined by Salman Khan and helmed by Farhad Samji, Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan was one of the much-awaited films of Bhaijaan. However, Salman Khan’s Eid gift to fans performed way below expectations with the action-comedy’s haywire storytelling being the primary cause. The film did not hit the right chords with the masses, bagging only 184.6 crores.
Kuttey
Directer Aasmaan Bhardwaj tried his hands on the fresh new genre of black comedy with the action thriller Kuttey. But sadly his efforts were rendered futile as the film starring Arjun Kapoor, Tabu, Konkona Sen Sharma, and Radhika Madan tanked at the box office. The story of three gangs pinned against each other faced a huge blow at the ticket window. With a budget of Rs 35 crore, Kuttey’s worldwide collection stands at approximately Rs 8 crore.
Bheed
The heart of the story was in its right place. Nevertheless, Rajkummar Rao couldn’t deliver his best in this Anubhav Sinha thriller drama. Playing the role of a cop, his character was assigned the responsibility of stopping a group of migrant workers from crossing during a lockdown period. The film amassed just Rs 2 crore at the ticket window.
Gumrah
Aditya Roy Kapur’s The Night Manager was a hit, but Gumrah? Not quite so. Helmed by Vardhan Ketkar, the action mystery centered around a murder investigation where police find an uncanny doppelganger of the suspect. Although the film made quite the noise upon its release, the hype fizzled out soon with Gumrah collecting only Rs 9 crore worldwide.
Tejas
Kangana Ranaut’s Tejas was one of the most ambitious films of 2023. The film sparked an ongoing debate about whether Tejas or Hrithik Roshan’s upcoming marvel The Fighter was Bollywood’s first aerial actioner. Although Kangana played the role of an Air Force pilot in the film for the first time, the action thriller was subjected to poor reviews, with many calling it a “bumpy ride". Tejas minted Rs 8 crores on a massive budget of Rs 60 crore.
Ghoomer
Ghoomer narrated the story of a wannabe female cricketer who after encountering an accident is forced to get her arm amputated. But she gets to see a new perspective on life and decides to follow her dream after meeting a failed cricketer Padam Singh. Although Abhishek Bachchan and Saiyami Kher played their parts brilliantly, the film only gained Rs 7.5 crore at the box office.
Neeyat
Vidya Balan once again slipped into the shoes of a detective for this whodunit murder mystery that takes place inside a lavish bungalow of a billionaire.
The film maintained an Agatha Christie detective novel vibe throughout with Vidya and the other cast delivering decent performances. Yet, the mystery-thriller managed to collect just Rs 6.9 crore worldwide.
