With rich content driven commercial projects, Karan Johar is one of the most loved and successful filmmakers of Indian cinema. Time and again, he has given movies for generations to rewatch and revisit. While he is basking in the success of his last released film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, he also recently revisted his 2019 film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. He revealed the time when he got drunk with Ranbir Kapoor during the shoot of the same.
In an interview with Film Companion, Karan shared that the film comes from a very personal space. “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil arrived as a love story which was my story. That was my story because I, in those six years, fell in love with somebody that was not mine and I understood what one-sided love is.”
He added, “Then I realised that there is a creature called unrequited love that is heartbreaking it can shatter you to pieces to smithereens actually, and there’s a physical pain. When we say heartache, it is not symbolic, it is true, it hurts and it hurts like hell. You feel like literally the earth has slipped by you, and you don’t know what to do. Making that film, that was the most cathartic journey I’ve had with the film.”
He then shared how Ranbir figured out that he was actually playing him [Karan]. “Everybody said the end is polarised, (asked) why have you gone this way? But it’s just the way I took the narrative. At one point Ranbir actually caught me, because I was so invested in the material, because it was coming to me, the way I was saying the lines, the way I was expressing the scenes. He said, ‘One second, am I playing you?’ And I was like, yes, and he’s like, ‘Anushka is?’ And I said, ‘A person I’d not like to meet for a while’. So, it all came together, he sat me down and took me to his room. I think we got drunk talking about my love story and the next day, I felt he had a spring in his step because he had all the tools that he needed.”
Earlier in an interview with Midday, Karan also shared that while the movie garnered mixed reviews, the film resonated a lot with the GenZ. “I feel it strongly with the generation of today, who really take their love seriously. We call it the Tinder generation, the swipe right-swipe left generation, but people are really falling in love. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil had a polarising last act, but that concept of crazy love really resonated especially with Gen Z kids. I’m far from Gen Z, I found this crazy love in my late 30s and early 40s, and it just went on for years. But it gave me a film, it gave me closure, and it has now given me a lot of perspective of never to go back in that zone again,” he shared.
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani marked Karan’s directorial comeback almost after 6 years since Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. Both the films are box office hits.
