Vikrant Massey starrer 12th Fail finally hit theatres on Friday, October 27. However, despite getting mixed reviews from critics, the film failed to leave a mark at the box office on its opening day. As reported by the industry tracker Sacnilk, Vidhu Vinod Chopra directorial earned Rs 1.10 crore on its first day at the box office in India. Reportedly, 12th Fail had an overall occupancy of 9.09% in Hindi market.
It should be noted that 12th Fail clashed at the box office with Kangana Ranaut’s Tejas. However, that movie also failed to leave a mark at the box office on its opening day and earned merely Rs 1 crore in India.
Based on a true story, 12th Fail depicts the struggles of the millions of students who aspire to clear UPSC entrance exam. However, the film encourages all not to lose heart but work even harder if they fail to clear the exam. Besides Vikrant Massey, the movie also stars Palak Lalwani, Sanjay Bishnoi, Medha Shankar and Anantvijay Joshi in key roles.
Recently, Kamal Haasan watched Vidhu Vinod Chopra directorial and praised the film and its subject. “I am very happy that I saw the film, and most of them who saw the film, I spoke to have only one thing to say: ‘It’s been a long time since we saw a good film like this’, and I second that motion. Thank you, Vinod Chopra, for making a film like this; it brings back hope in filmmakers like me to confidently go ahead and do what you love the most,” Haasan said in a video statement.
Meanwhile, News18 Showsha’s review of 12th Fail reads, “Once known for his distinctive style of storytelling and weaving intricate and complex narratives laced with socially relevant themes, Chopra doesn’t quite live up to expectations with 12th Fail. Much like his last directorial Shikara, this film too misses the mark and fizzles out. Sometimes, it’s not enough to just tell a tale. Times have changed and the need for nuance and edge has become paramount. To cut to the chase, its simplistic approach and treatment stops 12th Fail from soaring. But just like Manoj’s unwavering hope and resolve to achieve his dreams, here’s also hoping for the old Chopra who had redefined Hindi cinema to be back without much ado!”
