He made a debut in his father, Raj Kapoor’s 1970 film Mera Naam Joker. He acted in many Raj Kapoor-directed films. It was released on July 30, 1982 and emerged as a major commercial success at the box office. It became the second highest grossing film of 1982 after Vidhaata. The interesting fact about the film is that during its shooting, Raj Kapoor reprimanded Rishi Kapoor for a scene. This incident was shared by Rishi Kapoor in an interview.
Raj Kapoor became frustrated with Rishi Kapoor for not delivering the specific look he wanted for his role. Rishi Kapoor recollected the incident, stating that he had three different memories from his adult years which he shared without reservations. One of the memories was from their shooting of Prem Rog at their studio. The actor added that he had to bring the intense expression of a hopeless lover, and even though he tried hard, Raj Kapoor was not satisfied with the expression which he wanted.
Rishi Kapoor also added that his father Raj Kapoor said while shooting, “Mujhe Yusuf Chahiye (I want Yusuf)”. He wanted Rishi Kapoor to give the look Yusuf (Dilip Kumar) would have given in the situation. This incident is also recorded in Dilip Kumar’s autobiography, Dilip Kumar- The Substance and the Shadow.
