London: The seventh installment of the ‘Star Wars’ series titled ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ is on its way to break several records in UK and USA, but, in India the movie will have to face competition from Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Dilwale’ that continues to ride popularity waves. Also, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’ ‘Bajirao Mastani’ which is ruling the theatres.
After opening to a smashing response at the box office in UK and USA, the Harrison Ford-starrer, is making waves in the western theatres where it has effortlessly taken the audience to the surreal Galactic Empire.
Irrespective of the competition, ‘Star Wars’ series has its own loyal fans in India who are anxiously awaiting its release. Let’s check out various reasons why one should watch 'Star Wars':
'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' is the first installment in the new trilogy, directed by JJ Abrams that includes the original cast, Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) and Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker). It will be followed by two more Star Wars films, now being called just episodes VIII and IX. Besides the Disney and Lucasfilm are also planning a number of Star Wars spinoff films, one of which will be called 'Rogue One'. So, the fans have a lot to look forward to.
Feminine Mystique: Daisey Ridley as Rey has emerged as the biggest icon of girl power. Traditionally, Star Wars has been an all-boys bonanza, but, the seventh instalment has been in sync with the changing mindset. Rey is strong, intelligent and a skilled engineer so adept with machinery that she fixes every mechanical malfunction. Han Solo identifies her power, but, she fends herself.
Political references: Star Wars has been an important part of pop culture and its iconic dialogues have deeply embedded in the day to day lexicon. Political figures all across the globe have used these expressions to stress their point. American President Obama rushed up a press conference as “he got to get Star Wars”, while Prime Minister Modi called upon “May the force be with you” during his first American trip.
The original trilogy dates back to 1977 when 'Star Wars: A New Hope' had filled the audience imagination with the unique science fiction. This was followed by 'The Empire Strikes Back' in 1980 and 'Return of the Jedi' in 1983. In that trilogy the good guys (the Rebellion and the Jedi) fight the bad guys (the Empire ruled by the Sith).
R2 D2: A resourceful astromech droid, R2-D2 served Padmé Amidala, Anakin Skywalker and Luke Skywalker in turn, showing great bravery in rescuing his masters and their friends from many perils. The Force Awakens introduces a new character as the spotlight is on the droid invention BB-8.
The prequels were 'Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace' (1999), 'Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones' (2002) and 'Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith' (2005). Both the first and second trilogies were directed by George Lucas.
Harrison Ford: At 73, the actor continues to be the most powerful names in Hollywood. The fact that he was paid a mammoth sum as remuneration (50 times more than the other leads, as reported) confirms that Ford is the most celebrated star. According to Daily Mail, Harrison is the key “to make the movie work. He’s the link between the old and the new generation.” Disney and Lucasfilm have planned another movie that will narrate the younger times of Han Solo, the character played by Ford.
Darth Vader: Born as Anakin Skywalker, Darth Vader has emerged as one of the iconic villains of modern cinema. The sinister mask had created an enigma about the negative character while the mystery surrounding Vader as the audience for a very long time could not surely tell whether he was a human or some kind of alien. Darth Vader returns to the seventh episode as Kylo Ren is obsessed with it.
May the Force be with you: The expression has been used million times, but, ‘Force’ has a special significance as it is what gives Jedi his power. It’s an energy field created by all living things that surrounds us and also binds the galaxy together. Not everyone can use the Force, but those who can, will use it for good over evil, just like the Jedi.
C-3PO: Built by the heroic Jedi Anakin Skywalker, and a constant companion to astromech R2-D2, the C-3PO is shown with a red arm in the seventh instalment. Since C-3PO doesn’t age like his human counterparts, a red arm was injected to signify the passing of time has affected him, too. Another theory that was discovered on the internet suggested that red arm signified its commitment to the dark side of the force since red is the most favourite colour of all the Star War baddies.
