Not About Azaan, My Tweets Were Against Loud Sound, Clarifies Sonu Nigam

Sonu Nigam addressed the media on Wednesday afternoon clarifying his controversial tweets on azaan. The singer reiterated that he was not speaking against Islam but against the use of loudspeakers.

The singer said that he was not against any religion and that his tweets had been misconstrued. “I am a secular person, it was not about azaan, it was about the loud sound,” clarified the singer to the press and added “Playing loud sounds on speaker is gundagardi for me.”

The singer argued that he had also mentioned in his tweets about Gurdwaras and Temple misusing loudspeakers but no one had paid attention to that. “I can’t write an essay on Twitter. I also wrote a tweet on temples and gurudwara which no one reflected upon.”

Calling Mohammad Rafi his guru, the singer said that he was a secular person who had visited Ajmer Sharif and Pushkar Temple in the past. “My trainer was a Muslim. It’s not about my tweet, it’s about the thinking. I’ve taken up a social issue here not spoken on a religious topic,” said Sonu.

On Monday, Sonu, in a series if tweets complained about ‘forceful religiousness’ and had termed morning azaan being played on loudspeakers as gundagardi.
