'No Chance If You Are Married': Mahima Chaudhry Reveals The Darker Side Of Bollywood
The actress expressed her belief that cinema is moving towards a point where women are also making the decision.

Mahima Chaudhry made a remarkable debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Pardes. She garnered widespread acclaim for her performance. Winning a Filmfare award for Best Debut further solidified her position in the industry. Subsequently, Mahima appeared in several notable films like Dil Kya Kare, Dhadkan, Daag-The Fire, Dil Hai Tumhara, Yeh Tera Ghar Yeh Meraa Ghar and Baghban. While some of these films achieved success, others failed to sustain her initial stardom, leading to a gradual decline in her career trajectory.

Her last on-screen appearance was in Dark Chocolate in 2016, following which she remained inactive in the industry for nearly eight years. However, Mahima is set to make a comeback to the big screen with Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency, and The Signature.

In an interview with Hindustan Times, Mahima Chaudhry shed light on the evolution of Bollywood, particularly regarding the treatment of female stars. She expressed her belief that the industry is progressing towards empowering female performers, allowing them to make decisions, secure significant roles, demand higher compensation and obtain endorsements. She noted the resilience of contemporary female actors compared to the past.

Reflecting on Bollywood during her prime, Mahima revealed the dark side of the industry, highlighting how actresses were subjected to regressive norms. Filmmakers often sought out actresses who were perceived as ‘virgins’ and hadn’t engaged in romantic relationships. Any deviation from this image, such as dating or marriage, would result in their dismissal from the industry. Mahima emphasised that marriage or motherhood would effectively end an actress’s career.

Aside from her professional challenges, Mahima faced personal turmoil after being diagnosed with cancer in 2022, with veteran actor Anupam Kher publicly announcing the news. Mahima received medical treatment in Mumbai and expressed frustration over her inability to secure work due to hair loss resulting from the treatment.

Mahima Chaudhry’s journey reflects the highs and lows of the Bollywood industry, showcasing both its glitz and its darker realities.
