Mike Judge’s classic directorial, Idiocracy, remains a beloved gem among cinema lovers as its story was way ahead of its time. Starring Luke Wilson as Joe, the film follows his character waking up after 500 years into the future and discovers he’s the smartest person alive. Despite its initial dull theatrical response, Idiocracy has garnered a dedicated fanbase that appreciates its sarcastic commentary on society’s future. The film’s accurate depiction of the future resonates even more today. Surprisingly, there were never any plans for a sequel or spinoff, but Wilson recently dropped hints about the possibility of a follow up.
The actor shared an exciting update and potential plot details that has sparked hope among fans. During an interview with Esquire, Wilson revealed that he has been discussing the sequel with the film’s creator. Sharing his idea, the actor explained, “I’m always trying to get Mike to do another Idiocracy, where me and Terry Crews and Dak Shepard who played Fredo, where we come back from the future to the present day and you know see what happens.”
Interestingly, not just Luke Wilson, Terry Crews, who played the role of wrestling champion, p**n superstar and President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho in Idiocracy, had also hinted about making a comeback during a previous interview with Movieline in 2007.
The Brooklyn Nine Nine star had said, “It was a hard go the way Fox (production studio) treated him and all that. It’s hard. But I would love, in any way shape or form, to play Camacho again. Believe me, that’s something I’m definitely going to talk about with him again. I’m just going to badger him and badger him until I can bring Camacho back in some form. Me and Mike Judge are talking right now with Fox about some Camacho stuff. We literally met with Fox a week ago. It’s so cool.”
Last year, during a chat with Conan O’Brien, Luke Wilson joked about how Terry Crews’ character from Idiocracy, President Camacho, might actually be a good leader in today’s world. Wilson mentioned that many people have asked him about the same and he suggested that Camacho could be an excellent president now. He pointed out that Camacho genuinely cared about people, showed sympathy and was always ready to take action.
