Lipstick Under My Burkha: Ratna Shah Pathak, Plabita Borthakur's Edgy Characters Will Get You Excited
Ratna Shah Pathak as Usha Ji and Plabita as Rehana will get you excited for Lipstick Under My Burkha.

If the daring trailer of Lipstick Under My Burkha wasn't enough to pique your curiosity, the makers have now decided to introduce fans with two of its lead characters. Going by the character promos, Alankrita Shrivastava's directorial might just turn out to be the sassiest film of 2017.

The film, set in Bhopal, is based on the life of four women of different age groups - who know how to tame, explore and play with their sexual desires. Not in a dull, boring kind of a way but an inviting and alluring way that gets you interested in digging more about the past, present and the future of the characters. The film stars Ratna Shah Pathak, Konkona Sensharma, Aahana Kumra and Plabita Borthakur in lead roles and follows their journey towards liberation.

Ratna plays Usha Ji, a widow, who doesn't go the usual way but challenges the norms and beliefs of society by just being herself. In a society which in a way prescribes celibacy to women over 40, Usha is an idealistic misfit and a rebel who finds solace in reading erotic stories. Her fantasies and dreams open up when she meets and falls for a young swimming instructor.

Another character who'll get you all excited for the film is that of Plabita, who plays Rehana. A young girl who marches and dances to the beat of her own drum. She steps out in a burkha but soon gets out of it to pursue her dream of being a pop singer. The rebel in Rehana is likely to strike a chord with many young women out there, who often dwindle between their inner desires and society's expectations.

The entire concept of the film not just punctures the patriarch bubble of the society but also ends up shedding light on the varied and ambiguous ideologies of censor board that led it to deny certification to the film. After a prolonged battle with CBFC, the film will see the light of the day on July 21.
