Marvel fans are buzzing with excitement as Wade Wilson and Logan joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with Deadpool & Wolverine. Starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, the film features unexpected twists and surprising cameos, including the startling revelation that Charles Xavier aka Professor X, and his X-Men team are no longer alive. Despite this, James McAvoy, who portrayed the younger Charles Xavier in the 20th Century Fox X-Men films, has hinted at a possible return. In a recent interview with Variety, McAvoy expressed his willingness to reprise his role, provided the script is compelling. Notably, while McAvoy does not appear in Shawn Levy’s film, his name still appears in the credits.
The actor, who was accompanied by Director James Watkins and actress Mackenzie Davis for their latest horror movie, Speak No Evil, said, “I’ve always said, if there’s a good role, if there’s a good opportunity to tell a good story, I’m always going to be interested in it, no matter whether it’s something I’ve done before or something completely brand new. If there’s good material, I’m always ready to respond. I’m always ready. Ever ready. Actor ready. It’s got to be good, and they’ve got to want to do that, so it’s all hypotheticals.”
James McAvoy further admitted he hasn’t watched Deadpool & Wolverine yet, but was aware that his name would appear in the credits and didn’t expect to have a role in the movie. He humorously mentioned that he demanded his name to be included. He confirmed that there were no plans for him to join this particular project and suggested that the idea was likely discarded before he was contacted. Despite not being part of the film, McAvoy is interested in watching Deadpool & Wolverine and he’s eager to see it very soon.
During the 2021 interview with Comic Book, McAvoy shared his intention to return as Professor X in future Marvel projects. He had said, “I’m all about doing good stuff, and when I got asked to play Charles the first time, it was good stuff. It was good writing, and I was excited. If people offer me good writing, I’m always going to be excited, but I do feel like I’ve had a good ending with Charles and I got to explore some really good stuff, particularly in the first two movies that I did for him as a character. So if my time is done, I’m happy with the time that I spent and the time that I was given and if good writing comes in and people want to do stuff with me, I’ll always be open to that, but it’s got to be good.”
James McAvoy first appeared as Charles Xavier in X-Men: First Class and his last appearance was in the 2019 movie Dark Phoenix. Interestingly, Patrick Stewart’s version of Professor X was part of Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness.
