2018 has begun and with it comes a new list of films and television series to look forward to. While there have been a whopping number of films released in December 2017, the viewers have plenty of options to choose from in the coming weekend as well. On Friday, January 12, a total of 8 Bollywood and Hollywood films are making their way to the big screen with an addition of a few regional films. If you're a movie buff, here's all that the filmdom has to offer to you this weekend.
Kaalakaandi: Akshat Verma, who has previously helmed Delhi Belly, is coming back with another entertainer titled Kaalakaandi with Saif Ali Khan in the lead. The film seems to have a flavor of the 2011-released hit in its trailer. The story plays out in 12 hours with 6 characters from different worlds intertwined in fate, destiny and chaotic ironies. With dark humour in place and the likes of Kunaal Roy Kapur, Akshay Oberoi, Deepak Dobriyal in key roles alongside Saif, the film is quite a contender this weekend.
Mukkabaaz: Anurag Kashyap is expected to return to his rustic filmmaking roots with Mukkabaaz. Already a favourite in the festival circuit, the film is one of the many releases this week. Based in the city of Bareilly, the film revolves around a love story of a boxer Shrayan and a high-caste mute girl and brings to fore the social and political elements that run deep even in today’s time. The film stars Vineet Kumar Singh, Jimmy Sheirgill and Ravi Kishan in key roles.
1921: Directed by Vikram Bhatt, the second instalment in the 1920 horror franchise, stars Zareen Khan and Karan Kundra in pivotal roles. It’s touted to be a horror drama but many social media users are expecting this one to be an unintentional comedy instead. Karan plays a would-be musician Ayush who is in England to pursue his artistic training before he gets distracted by Rose, played by Zareen.
The Post: Directed and produced by Steven Spielberg, The Post is one of the front-runners at the Oscars this year with Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Sarah Paulson and Bradley Whitford in significant roles. The political thriller is based on the real story of the journalists from The Washington Post and The New York Times who published the Pentagon Papers regarding the involvement of the US government during the Vietnam war. While Streep plays Kay Graham, the country’s first female newspaper publisher, Hanks is Ben Bradlee, the Editor of The Washington Post.
Downsizing: The film stars Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz, Hong Chau and Kristen Wiig in key roles and revolves around the story of a couple who decides to undertake a newly-invented procedure, discovered by Norwegian scientists, to shrink their bodies in order to pursue a better and all the life-changing adventures which then follow the couple. The film premiered at the 74th Venice Film Festival.
Darkest Hour: Directed by Joe Wright and written by Anthony McCarten, Darkest Hour is a war drama film starring Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill, Ben Mendelson, Kristin Scott Thomas, Lily James and Rold Pickup. The film follows Winston Churchill's early days as Prime Minister as Hitler closed in on Britain during World War II. The film has already won Gary Oldman his first Golden Globe for his fine portrayal of Churchill.
Paddington 2: Directed by Paul King and written by King and Simon Farnaby, Paddington 2 is a comedy film based on the stories of Michael Bond’s popular character Paddington bear. The film is a sequel to the 2014-film Paddington and stars Ben Whishaw and Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Grant and Brendan Gleeson.
Wish Upon: Directed by John R Leonetti, Wish Upon is a supernatural horror film starring Joey King, Ki Hong Lee, Sydney Park, Ryan Phillippe and Elisabeth Rohm in key roles. The film follows a teenage girl who happens to find a magic box that grants wishes but kills someone close to her with each wish. Will she pay the hefty price of getting her wishes fulfilled?
