Ewan Mitchell's Aemond Targaryen On Why He Doesn't Want To Watch Game Of Thrones
Ewan Mitchell, who played the role of Aemond Targaryen, spoke about the prospect of his character's future in the second season.

The much-awaited second season of HBO’s fantasy series, House of the Dragon, is ready for release on June 17. Even if the gap between the first and second seasons is just a little under a year and a half, it feels like forever, isn’t it? Moving on to the second generation of the Targaryen family, House of the Dragon 2 will also mark the return of Aemond Targaryen, who will have an expanded role this time. In the previous season, the Targaryen prince killed his nephew Lucerys and is now expected to bring a dark side.

Ewan Mitchell, who played the role of Aemond Targaryen, recently spoke about the prospect of his character’s future in the second season, adding that fans will see a lot of “unexpected” stuff. He also opened up about Aemond’s inner feelings.

“Audience Will See Different Dimensions Of Aemond Targaryen”

Speaking to ComicBook ahead of the season 2 release, Ewan Mitchell began by noting how Aemond continued to challenge the audience. “I think that’s one of the beauties of the character. You’re not completely sure. You know, it’s like, you don’t necessarily know what’s going on inside with Aemond, but you do know something is going on inside. There are cogs turning behind his eyes. You’re not too sure which way he’s going to go. I love how Aemond continually challenges the audience with what they think about him. In those last three scenes of season one, I wanted to create a character who was just complete darkness, only to contradict that at the end of the series when you see that face of regret on Aemond and recognise that was a mistake,” he said, further adding that there will be more “unexpected” moments in season 2.

Ewan also explained how these traits from Aemond’s character made him return for the second part. “It was about exploring that shadow side, creating a more morally compromised, gray character going into season two, and seeing another angle to him—you know, the three episodes that I had with Aemond. I wanted to create him as almost like this one-dimensional black cat sort of character, and in season two, you are going to see other dimensions to him for sure,” he added.

He also revealed that he hasn’t watched Game of Thrones. Citing the reasons, he added, “I have a confession to make. I’ve never seen it and I didn’t want to watch it going into this role. I didn’t want it to inform my decisions in any way, shape, or form, you know, whether it be consciously or subconsciously. I wanted to bring something fresh. Aemond is one of a kind, you know.”

Apart from Mitchell, the second season will mark the return of Emma D’Arch as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Queen Alicent, and Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys, among others.

House of the Dragon 2 will be released on June 16.
