Bharatiya Janata Party executive and actress Jayalakshmi was arrested by the Tirumangalam police on charges of fraud and document forgery, following an order from the Egmore court. The arrest stemmed from allegations made by lyricist Snehan, who claimed that Jayalakshmi was soliciting funds from the public under the guise of her trust, the Snehan Foundation. Snehan alleged that despite reaching out twice seeking clarification via letters to the address listed on the foundation’s website, he received no response. Furthermore, upon attempting to contact the provided mobile number, he was instructed to meet separately. Upon visiting the address mentioned on the website, Snehan discovered no functioning office.
As per reports, Jayalakshmi refused to accompany the police in their van, asserting her innocence and insisting on driving to the station in her car.
In a report from 2022, Jayalakshmi also filed a complaint against Snehan, asserting that she had been operating the Sneham Foundation since 2018 without soliciting funds from the public. She accused Snehan of attempting to tarnish her reputation by spreading misinformation about the foundation and claimed he never reached out to seek clarification. Jayalakshmi maintained that she conducted charitable activities through the foundation using her funds and attributed Snehan’s actions to her rising popularity within the BJP.
Professionally, Jayalakshmi has been an active campaigner for the Bharatiya Janata Party, having contested from the BJP in Chennai’s 90th ward elections, albeit unsuccessfully. Meanwhile, Snehan is known for his work as a lyricist in the film Paramporul, written and directed by C Aravind Raj. The film, which premiered on September 1, 2023, is currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime.
It remains to be seen how the legal proceedings unfold regarding Jayalakshmi’s arrest and the allegations against her, as well as the implications for her political and professional endeavours moving forward.
