In Hinduism, the deceased ancestors are worshipped like gods, especially during Pitru Paksha. It lasts for 16 days, encompassing various rituals during this time to appease the souls of their ancestors. People do Pind Daan to the departed to help them seek peace and salvation. Pitru Paksha will commence from the full moon date of Bhadrapad month, that is today, September 17. It will conclude on Ashwin Amavasya on October 2. Many people hang pictures of their deceased ancestors in the house to worship them. Putting photos anywhere in the home can be considered inauspicious for many reasons. In such a situation, Narmadapuram’s astrologer Pandit Pankaj Pathak explains the benefits of hanging photos of the deceased ancestors in the right direction at home.
While talking to Local18, Narmadapuram’s astrologer said that hanging photos of the ancestors brings peace and happiness to the home.Placing it in the wrong direction can invite negative energy in the house, adds astrologer Pandit Pankaj Pathak. In Vastu Shastra, the rules for the placement of the photos of our deceased ancestors in the home are mentioned. The Hindu devotees are advised not to keep the photo of their ancestors with a picture of a living person. “Never place the photo of our ancestors in the bedroom, temple or kitchen. Placing them here can create an atmosphere of unrest in the house. Doing this makes our ancestors angry,” said Narmadapuram’s astrologer Pandit Pankaj Pathak.
According to the scriptures, wherever the photo of the ancestors is placed, a mustard oil lamp must be lit there every evening. Apart from this, an oil lamp should be lit on the day of Amavasya. This gives us the blessings of our ancestors. According to Vastu Shastra, the picture of ancestors should be hung in the south direction. This direction is considered to be of Lord Yama and our ancestors. Hanging the picture of ancestors in the home temple is prohibited as it is considered inauspicious.
During Pitru Paksha, people perform various rituals like tarpan, shraddha and pind daan to appease the souls of their ancestors. It is generally believed that during Pitru Paksha time, the souls of the ancestors come to earth and the descendants perform these rituals to satisfy them.
