The food literati is in mourning with news that the magazine from New York chef David Chang of Momofuku fame and writer Peter Meehan, is folding.
In a letter to readers, Meehan tried to break the news gently to fans, as though he were a parent trying to soften the blow to his children.
"Your mom and I have been meaning to talk to you for a while. But there sometimes comes a time in a publication's life where...jeez, this is difficult. Puberty usually only equals death for caterpillars...and sometimes food magazines."
For the website luckypeach.com, the curtain will close May 1.
The final issue of the magazine will publish as a double issue in the fall, themed after "The Suburbs."
Over on Facebook, readers expressed their disappointment and surprise.
"This is such a huge loss. 'Lucky Peach' is undoubtedly the best food publication going; thank you all for the incredible, insightful articles on every topic imaginable. There'll never be another like you," commented one subscriber.
"This breaks my heart. Where will I find my fun crass alt-culinary literature? 'Lucky Peach' is a masterpiece," wrote another.
"Lucky Peach" launched in 2011 as a quarterly magazine featuring essays, art, food photography, recipes and in partnership with McSweeney's that ended in 2013.
The website was launched in 2015.
The publication has won nine James Beard awards including publication of the year in 2016.
