Is Stem Cell Transplant Often The Only Treatment Option For Blood Cancer Patients? Why So?
Successful transplants depend on finding a matching stem cell donor, and over 70% of patients cannot find a match within their families, relying instead on unrelated donors.

Blood cancers and disorders encompass conditions affecting the blood, bone marrow, or lymphatic system, impacting millions globally and underscoring the need for awareness, research, and quality healthcare access. Early detection and effective management are crucial for combating these diseases. For many patients with blood cancer or disorders, stem cell transplantation is often the only treatment option, offering a chance at a new life. However, successful transplants depend on finding a matching stem cell donor, and over 70% of patients cannot find a match within their families, relying instead on unrelated donors.

Patrick Paul, CEO, DKMS BMST Foundation India, says, “The success of stem cell transplantation depends on the altruistic donations of stem cell donors worldwide. Peripheral Blood Stem Cell (PBSC) donation is the most common method, involving the administration of Granulocyte Colony Stimulating Factor (G-CSF) to increase stem cell production and circulation in the donor’s bloodstream. On the donation day, the process, akin to blood platelet donation, involves collecting blood, isolating stem cells, and returning the remaining blood to the donor.”

Blood stem cell donors are supported throughout the process by a dedicated team of experts who provide guidance, support, and reassurance. From arranging travel to providing accommodations, every detail is meticulously managed to ensure the donor’s comfort and well-being by organizations.

Paul adds, “Ultimately, stem cell transplantation represents a collective effort to uphold the health rights of patients facing blood cancers and disorders. Increasing the number of registered potential stem cell donors aged 18-55, through simple cheek swab samples, is essential to this mission. The selfless contributions of donors, coupled with the unwavering support of healthcare professionals, offer patients the chance to regain their health and vitality.”
