Makar Sankranti is a festival that is celebrated throughout the country. People from different parts of India have unique and different ways of celebrating it. In the west, people fly kites, while in North India, people tend to donate to the needy. Now, it has been found that Madhya Pradesh also has a unique way of celebrating Makar Sankranti. Every year, during the occasion, there is a special sweet that is sold in the markets of the Bundelkhand region. As per reports, these sweets are specially made for the festival and are sold during this time of the year only. Over the years, traditional fairs have been organised here for about 100 years. On this day, people get to eat the famous sweet dish, Gadhiya Gulla, which is quite popular in the area.
On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, this sweet is made and served to Lord Shiva first. Then it is served to people. Gadhiya Gulla is sold in the markets only for about 6 days. After this, this sweet disappears from the markets and is rarely seen at sweet shops. The tradition of this sweet has been going on for years in the Bundelkhand region.
One of the shop owners’ last five generations have been selling Gadhiya Gulla. He said that on the festival of Makar Sankranti, one must have tasted different types of sweets, but the Gadhiya Gulla prepared from pure sugar are different and extremely delicious. He added that these sweets will be available only in the Sagar, Damoh, and Chhatarpur districts of Bundelkhand. Elders used to say that in the Mahabharata period, when sweets were not so popular, this Gadhiya Gulla was called the sweet of the poor; since then, this sweet has been in trend. People from faraway places come to eat these sweets, as they are rare and only found during a particular time of the year.
