How Can Women Fulfil Their Calcium Quota?
Experts say that calcium deficiencies in women give rise to conditions like osteoporosis which causes bones to become weak and brittle.

We remember being asked by our parents to ‘eat the greens’ or to finish the entire glass of milk during childhood. Green vegetables like spinach, and milk are a good source of calcium. But, why calcium? This is because calcium is one of the most important minerals for the human body as it has significance in the functioning of vital organs like the brain and skeletal muscle. Surprisingly 99 percent of the calcium in the human body is stored in bones and teeth which gives them strength and structure.

Experts say that calcium deficiencies in women give rise to conditions like osteoporosis which causes bones to become weak and brittle.

Bone Health and Osteoporosis foundation claims that approximately one in two women over the age of 50 years will break a bone because of osteoporosis.

According to WebMD, women in the US were not getting enough bone-building calcium during the 2000s, in spite of health authorities pushing the envelope.

The current situation in India is also not very promising. According to a 2019 report by Firstpost, 50 million Indians were affected by osteoporosis with most of the cases going unnoticed.

However, all this can be avoided by taking an adequate amount of calcium that prevents osteoporosis.

How can women complete their calcium needs?

As our body doesn’t produce calcium, we need to get the nutrient from external sources.

  • Dairy products including cheese, milk and yogurt can help you with your calcium needs.
  • Green leafy vegetables like kale, spinach and broccoli are also beneficial
  • You can also add fish, soy products and fruit juices in your diet
