SHIMOGA/UDUPI/BANGALORE: Confusion continues to dog the BJP state ranks on the future role and moves of former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa. The senior leader has been sending mixed signals ever since he was freed from jail last week and on Monday, he shook the party’s already battered morale in Bellary by stating that he would not campaign for the Bellary (Rural) Assembly bypoll.Though he did not specify clearly why he would stay away from the bypoll, he gave two cryptic replies — firstly for personal reasons and secondly, an even more cryptic reply “a special reason”. He, however, did not elaborate what the personal and special reasons were that forced him to abstain from the campaign. This statement from the embattled Lingayat strongman was enough to put the party top brass in the state in a tizzy. In Udupi, BJP state president K S Eshwarappa was quick to react saying he was “confident” of Yeddyurappa campaigning in the Bellary byelection. In Bangalore, Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda too expressed confidence that the former CM would campaign for the BJP.Yeddyurappa expressed confidence that BJP candidate Gadhilingappa will win the byelection. “There is no need for me to campaign in Bellary. People of Bellary will vote for BJP because of our work,” he  stated.Saying that “freedom in Bellary was in the hands of a few,’’ Yeddyurappa claimed  “the victory of the BJP candidate will bring back true democracy to the people of Bellary. Everybody must collectively join hands to ensure this true freedom from a few who are controlling the affairs in Bellary.’’Yeddyurappa, however, said that he would participate in the BJP MLAs’ and MPs’ meeting scheduled in Bangalore on November 17 and 18 to discuss Bellary byelection.
