Will Ensure That Udta Punjab Remains a Film That Denounces Drugs: Bombay HC
Present generation wants something mature. There shouldn’t be a hue and cry about it.

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Thursday said it will ensure that Anurag Kashyap's Udta Punjab will remain a film that denounces drugs.

The court made this remark on a plea for admitting a writ petition against the Central Board of Film Certification's 89 cuts on the controversial film set against a background of rampant drug abuse in Punjab.

The court's remarks during the day showed it was not satisfied with the reasons given by the Censor Board for the cuts. The writ petition is yet to be admitted, as the court will take up the matter again on Friday.

The film which was slated to be released on June 17 has been embroiled in a controversy over delays in film certification after the makers of the film sparred with CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani over unreasonable cuts.

Director Anurag Kashyap moved court to defend his film even as Nihlani accused the film makers of trying to defame the state of Punjab.

This is what the court told the two sides over the issue:

To CBFC

How can you ask them to remove the words election, MLA and MP? I remember a movie called ' Aaj Ka MLA Ram avtar'

Another state Goa has also been depicted in bad light, what has your board done about it?

Present generation wants something mature. There shouldn’t be a hue and cry about it.

To the film makers

Creative freedom has survived in spite of the CBFC Act and it has been upheld till now.

Everybody has fallen in line due to the CBFC Act.

Every creative person, whoever he is, knows that there are limits to his work. ‎

CBFC views the film and revisits it, so they are not adversaries. They are performing a job.

An adult (A) certificate, doesn't absolve the filmmaker from the requirement to employ caution.

What's your reaction?
