Amidst a shortage of legal representation for Sanjay Roy, who stands accused of the rape and murder of a female doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital, Supreme Court lawyer Ajay Prakash Singh expressed his willingness to consider taking on the case. In an exclusive interview with News18 Hindi, Singh indicated that he might be prepared to represent Roy if approached, though he noted that there would be certain conditions.
Previously, Singh was the defence lawyer for the accused in the 2012 Nirbhaya rape case and also the 2020 Hathras gangrape case. However, he faced public criticism over the same. Singh was also the lawyer for ‘Bhole Baba’ in the recent Hathras stampede case.
In the recent interview, Singh did not directly address the case of Sanjay Roy, however, he emphasised that every accused individual had the right to legal representation. He stated that accused individuals need a defence lawyer to present their case in the court. “If the accused does not receive a fair chance to defend himself, it sets a dangerous precedent”, he added.
Singh acknowledged the public’s strong sentiments against Roy, describing him as a figure of revulsion who has committed heinous acts. “People view him as a menace to society, and there is little sympathy for him. Whether he is imprisoned or not, his potential threat to society remains a concern. There is a widespread belief that he might continue to pose a danger, even if released,” Singh added.
When asked whether he would represent Roy, Singh said that presently not as the priority was to hear from the people involved. “If the accused’s family members reached out to me, then I will consider it further,” he added. Singh emphasised that any decision to take on the case would depend on whether Roy’s family contacts him directly.
Originally from Uttar Pradesh, Singh gained prominence through his involvement in several high-profile cases in recent years. His legal arguments have sparked debate from Delhi’s lower courts to the Supreme Court. Despite controversies, Singh is known for his willingness to represent those in need.
