The curtain came down on Saturday on the week-long International Yoga Festival at Parmarth Niketan on the banks of the Ganga here with over 600 participants from 50 countries learning the nuances of the ancient Indian system of physical and spiritual well being at the annual event.

"The participants left with love in their hearts for yoga, the Ganga and the sacred land of Uttarakhand," said a spokesman of Parmarth Niketan which holds the event every year.

"As a symbol of their love they celebrated the special occasion of International Women's Day by honouring the Mother Ganga for providing them inspiration and rejuvenation during the course of their stay," he said.

The participants paid obeisance to the holy river by performing Ganga Yoga, a variation developed by American yogacharya Laura Plumb, to mark conclusion of the event.

The day s activities included yoga, prayer, meditation and narration of stories about how Mother Ganga descended on the arid valley, the spokesman said.

Sharing the significance of Ganga s descent on Earth with participants at the valedictory session, the head of Parmarth s Yoga and Meditation Centre Abhaji said the Mother Goddess (Ganga) came here to bring life and liberation."

"It is not merely a river but truly the Goddess in the form of a life-giving river."
