New Delhi: Wanted criminal Rajesh Bharti, along with three of his accomplices, was killed in a police encounter in Chattarpur on Saturday, police said.

Six policemen were also injured in the shootout, which took place between 12.30-1.30pm.

The Special Cell sleuths had been keeping an eye on a farmhouse in Chattarpur for the past two to three months as they suspected that the gang members would come there. When the criminals were intercepted, the police asked them to surrender. However, the gang members started firing at the police team, which then retaliated.

“A total of six policemen received bullet injuries in the encounter," said DCP Special Cell Sanjeev Yadav, adding that four criminals died on the spot while the fifth received injuries.

The gang members were identified as head Rajesh Bharti, Kapil, Sanjeet Vindro, Umesh Don and Bhiku, police said.

Mohd Saddik, a local, said: "We heard the sound of crackers for fifteen minutes and thought there was some celebration going on. Later, we were told about the encounter."

Saddik had come to meet his relatives but was denied access as the area near Channan Hola in south Delhi was cordoned off.

The DCP said, “Criminal Rajesh Bharti and his associates were absconding from Haryana Jail since a long time. They were wanted in several heinous cases and had a reward of Rs 1 lakh on them."
