KOCHI: For those who love to splurge as well as for those who hold on tight to the purse-strings, the ongoing Vanitha Utsav 2012 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is just what the doctor ordered!  With a wide variety of goodies, ranging from from electronic gadgets and accessories to clothes, food  and decorative items, and catering to all kinds of budgets, you would be spoilt for choice at the colourful pavilions. Some of the interesting items one finds are in the platinum area, which has home-appliances, FMCG products, clothes, shoes and much more. “In the platinum zone, one will get things that are exclusively from Delhi. There is Berg’s electric tandoor and juicers which are manufactured in Delhi and not to be found here,” says Aditya Sollu, organiser. A stall of magic toys for children put up by Rafeek from Delhi is also a centre of much attention. The magic kit with different puzzles and more than 150 games comes at a price of `250.One corner is lit up by the beautiful mural paintings put up in a Rajasthan stall. The artists have come to Kerala for the first time. “The murals are washable as vegetable dyes are used in the paintings. There are paintings of Krishna, Ganesh, Tirupati Balaji available at our stall,” says Prakash Kumar, owner. The price starts from `300 and goes upto `30,000. It takes seven to three months of hardwork to complete these murals and that is the reason behind the high prices.Another item that catches the eye at the fair is the wall-mounting shoe rack, which is very handy for flat-dwellers or those pressed for space. These racks are compact and rust-free, with the price-range starting from `3,600.As it is becoming a hardship to decompose household wastes, portable bio-gas plants have been introduced for sale at the exhibition. “From half a kilogram of waste produced in a day, one and half-hour worth of gas is produced,” said the stall-manager. These are priced at `19,000 but after deducting government subsidy and the exhibition subsidy, the cost comes down to `14,500. “Transportation and installation of the plant is free of cost.”Besides the multitude of stalls and goods, there are also lucky draws, prizes and discounts included at the ‘Utsav’ to draw in the crowds. And it doesn’t stop there. Adding more colour to the fest are the entertainment shows held in the evening. The fest is on till February 5 from 11 am till 9 pm.
