KCOHI: The UPA Government’s real political stand behind its veiled approach in the Enrica Lexie episode has come out with the Centre on Saturday coming out against the state’s interest. The Centre had been silent for the past two months, waiting for the Piravom bypoll to get over and for the issue to cool down, according to political observers.Even after various petitions came up in the High Court, including the one seeking to quash the first information report against two Italian marines in the case, the Centre was silent, clearly playing politics throughout. “There is clear influence of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi in the case,” Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy said. The Centre’s political stand has been unveiled and it has become  clear that it has surrendered the nation, he added. When the petition seeking to quash the FIR came up before the court, the Centre and the state had  strongly opposed the plea of Italy. At the time of hearing, the court had even criticised the Centre heavily for its silence. The Centre, which had been keeping silent for the past two months, has at last shown its real political interest, Swamy said and added that the UPA was only waiting for the Piravom bypoll results to come. Moreover, he said that the UPA Government betrayed the nation and lowered India’s image. Counsel for the owner of the Italian vessel had earlier revealed before the court that all the issues related to Enrica Lexie case would be settled after the Piravom bypoll, which points to the fact that the Centre has allegedly played covert politics.Political observer Sebastian Paul, who also shared the same view, said “the whole issue is much linked to the Piravom byelection. Until the bypoll, the UPA Government was silent. There were rumours at the time of the election that nothing would happen in the case till the results are out, which has proved right,” he said.“It was quite surprising that the Centre has now taken a stand which the Italians themselves have not taken. The Centre was not taking the defence of Italy in the Supreme Court, he said. “I did not think the Centre would come out so fast with such a statement. I hope they would take such a stand only after the Neyyattinkara bypoll,” he said.
