Baghpat: A Khap Panchayat in Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh is in news after it decided to ban love marriages and put restrictions on women. The police have registered an FIR against 19 people after locals clashed with the police.

Two police officers were injured and two police motorcycles were also burnt after local authorities raised objection to a Panchayat being held. Local administration says they were not kept in the loop about the Panchayat that took place three days back.

The Panchayat is located in Baghpat, which is barely 50 km from the national capital and is Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh's constituency.

The Panchayat banned women under the age of 40 years from going out shopping and going out unescorted and barred boys from using headphones on roads and in bylanes. The Panchayat also ruled that when women leave their homes, their heads must be covered.

On the positive side, the Panchayat also condemned the practice of dowry calling it a punishable offence.
