Katni: A man in Katni district of Madhya Pradesh set himself ablaze after pouring kerosene on himself after not being able to exchange old currency notes despite repeated attempts in past few days.
42-year-old Aqeel Khan was rushed to the hospital with 70 per cent burn injuries where his situation remains to be critical.
Post demonetisation of high-value currency, the chaotic situation might be limping back to normalcy in major cities but the sufferings are visible in towns and villages.
According to Khan, e had Rs 46,000 old currency notes in denomination of Rs 500 and Rs 1000. After the high volume currency was banished on November 8, he tried to ensure liquidity by exchanging his notes at the banks but everytime he went there, he returned empty handed due to the huge rush.
This added to his frustration so much so that he took the extreme step on Sunday by pouring kerosene on self and tried immolate self.
Noteworthy, the local tehsildar Rajmani Bagri has an entirely different tale to share. As per him, Khan had incurred huge losses in his shoe shop and this drove him to the extreme step.
People who have been to remote areas in Madhya Pradesh have confirmed that the process of getting the currency exchanged is still keeping anxious people on their toes.
