Turning Point: Anupam Kher on The Godfather
Anupam Kher talks about a film that changed his life, one he considers the finest in the history of American cinema.

Mumbai: Anupam Kher is one actor who can speak passionately about films. Ask him to name one film that changed his life and without pondering much he picks the celebrated Hollywood classic The Godfather. It’s one film that he says brought tears in his eyes and he rightfully claimed it to be a ‘must watch’ for all students of cinema.

Anupam Kher: From an actor’s point of view, my favourite film has to be The Godfather. It had the richest star cast that anybody could get in those days. From Marlon Brando to Al Pacino, it cast the greatest actors of its times.

I was fresh in drama school when I saw this film. There are so many scenes in it that left me completely shaken and stirred. In fact I cried after watching this film.

Marlon Brando’s performance in The Godfather is one of the finest ones in the history of American cinema. It was a minimalistic performance and yet so very gigantic and larger than life. He designed a completely new language of gestures with this film.

Francis Ford Coppola, the director of The Godfather treated a gangster story like a family film. The best scene is when Sonny gets killed and Brando comes there and asks, "What have they done to my son?" The scene where Al Pacino is taken to a small town in a car, which eventually gets blown away, is some of the most moving scenes in the film.

You cannot be a student of cinema if you haven’t seen The Godfather just as you can’t call yourself religious if you don’t pray. It is indeed the finest film ever made in the history of international cinema.
