NAMAKKAL: The Tamil Nadu Toddy Movement (TNTM) has been gearing up for a massive agitation to force the State government to withdraw the ban on toddy sale.A decision on the future course of action was discussed at a meeting of the executive committee here on Sunday. S Nallasamy, Coordinator of the TNTM chaired the meeting in which L Kathiresan and state convener, S Ramasamy participated.Talking to Express, S Nallasamy sought the Chief Minister to fulfil her promise on the issue of toddy tapping and sales.“The CM, during her election campaign in Pollachi, assured us that she would take necessary steps to lift the ban if she comes to power. Now, we appeal to her to fulfil the promise,” he said. While noting that toddy is not an intoxicant, the veteran leader of the toddy movement said it is part of common man’s food.Recalling the observations of the committee headed by Justice K P Sivasubramanian on toddy, he said the committee had made recommendations in favour of toddy tapping. He urged the government to release the report of the committee which has been kept in the dark for long.The ban on toddy tapping was imposed by the government in January 1987.
