Exams for the first batch of Class X students under the Uniform School Education System will commence on April 4.

CHENNAI: Exams for the first batch of Class X students under the Uniform School Education System will commence on April 4 and end on April 23 this year. An official announcement has been made in his regard by the Directorate of Government Examinations on Tuesday.

As against the usual practice of holding the Class X exams of all four boards in the last week of March, the government has delayed the exam period by more than a week this year. In 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011, the Class 10 exams for SSLC students had begun on March 27, March 25, March 23 and March 28 respectively, while for Matriculation board students, they commenced on March 25, March 18, March 23 and March 22 respectively.

The delay in the exams this year was largely because of the introduction of a new common syllabus system and delay in distribution of the textbooks to students. Despite schools opening for the academic year in June 2011, textbook distribution began only in August after the Supreme Court directed the state government to implement the Uniform School Education System by August 19.

The exams - common for the first time for students of all four boards: State, Matriculation, Anglo-Indian and Oriental - will commence with Language Paper I on April 4, followed by Language Paper II on April 9, English Paper I on April 11, English Paper II on April 12, Mathematics on April 16, Science on April 19 and Social Science on April 23. The duration of the exams will be two-and-a-half hours, between 10.15 am and 12.45 pm, preceded by exam formalities, including 10 minutes for reading the question paper  and 5 minutes to fill up particulars in the answer sheet.

The timetable for private candidates, who are following the old syllabus, has also been announced. Private candidates of the Matriculation stream will write their exams between April 4 and 20, SSLC students and OSLC students between April 4- 23, while the Anglo-Indian board will have exams between April 4 and April 19.

In all, more than 11 lakh students will write the exams this year. It has already been announced that the Higher Secondary Examinations will be held in the state from March 8 to March 30 in he state.
