The son of veteran Congress leader Lourdusamy Pillai, he was elected MP from Tiruchy in 1984, 1989 and 1991.
He joined the Tamil Maanila Congress, launched by late GK Moopanar, after the TNCC split in 1996. He contested the LS polls on a TMC ticket and was elected MP in 1996. He is survived by wife Rani, three sons and two daughters.
