Mira Nair’s much-awaited movie The Namesake is set to premiere in Kolkata, where it was partly shot, on Tuesday.

New Delhi: Filmmaker Mira Nair’s much-awaited movie The Namesake, based on author Jhumpa Lahiri’s critically-acclaimed book of the same name, will premiere in Kolkata on Tuesday, two months before it is scheduled to release in the US and India.

The film, starring actors Irrfan Khan, Tabu and Kal Penn was shot for two weeks in Kolkata, between May-June 2005.

Most of the cast and crew of Namesake, led by Mira, is expected to be present for the premiere at Priya cinema hall in the city, including every technician involved with the Calcutta leg of the shooting, right up to the head carpenter and travel arrangers. Actor Kal Penn, who plays Gogol in the movie, may not be able to make it for the premiere.

Author Jhumpa Lahiri, who has a special appearance in the film as Jhumpamashi, will be present at the Deshapriya Park theatre as well.

“The most beautiful aspect about Namesake was that it gave me the ability to unite the story of the two cities – Kolkata and New York where I grew up. I filmed the two cities as if they were one,” Mira Nair had said earlier in an interview to CNN-IBN.
