The Supreme Court on Thursday appointed senior counsel and former Solicitor General of India Gopal Subramanium as amicus curiae in the Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple case.

A Bench comprising Justice R M Lodha and Justice A K Patnaik also rapped Kerala for its decision to strip the temple executive officer Hari Kumar off his powers and curtail his right to enter the temple security area on security grounds.

The Bench appointed Gopal Subramanium as amicus curiae after obtaining the consent of Kerala and that of the Travancore royal family.

Senior counsel K K Venugopal, appearing for the Travancore royal family told the Bench that the whole administration is now in the hands of the administrative officer.

He wants police verification of all the eight staff and that of the executive officer. As a result of this, I am not given a pass to enter even the vaults, he said.

Liz Mathews, counsel for Kerala, told the Bench that a security report was submitted in August 2011. In the light of the adverse report of the Home Ministry, the executive officer Hari Kumar was not given a pass.

To this, Justice Lodha said, “We’ve no complaint against Hari Kumar. Your Home Ministry report says he is a man of serious antecedents. It is not fair on your part. If you had any problem, you should have made an application to us stating that these persons don’t have good antecedents. You, on your own did it,” Justice Lodha reprimanded.

The Bench posted the matter for further hearing to September 19.
