Patna: At least 29 people were injured when police on Friday fired rubber bullets and charged with batons at a violent demonstration by primary school teachers in Patna demanding reguralisation of their jobs.

State Home secretary Afzal Amanullah told reporters that thousands of shiksha mitras, temporary primary school teachers, from across the state assembled near R block railway crossing and indulged in throwing stones and brickbats at policemen who prevented them from entering the high-security zone housing the secretariat, state legislature and the residences of the Governor and Chief Minister.

Fourteen government employees and 15 persons, including some teachers, were injured in the clash, Amanullah said.

Some of the protestors also attempt to scale an iron barricade "made a futile attempt to disrupt the movement of trains and hold the civil authorities to ransom", the Home Secretary said.

He added the police had to resort to lathicharge when rubber bullets, water canons and teargas failed to disperse the protestors.

Sixty-four teachers were taken into custody. They were protesting the state government's refusal to regularise their services and to press for service conditions at par with teachers in state-run schools.

The agitators also demanded they be allowed to meet Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Education Minister Brishen Patel or Shief Secretary G S Kang. Kumar who was away in Delhi.
