Police believe Mudassir planned a series of grenade attacks in Srinagar on July 11 that left nine tourists dead.

Srinagar: In a major breakthrough, Jammu and Kashmir Police has arrested a top terrorist commander blamed for 25 attacks and tourist killings.

Mudassir, believed to be the chief planner of Lashkar-e-Toeaba, was arrested on Saturday, said DGP Gopal Sharma.

Sharma did not say when the arrest was made.

Police believe Mudassir, who goes by a single name, planned a series of grenade attacks July 11 in Srinagar that left nine tourists dead, says Sharma.

''(The arrest) is a great setback to the militants,'' Sharma said.

Sharma said that Mudassir also planned three grenade attacks on June 11 in Jammu, that killed one man and injured 29 others.

Mudassir, a Kashmiri, became a militant in 1999 and received arms training in Pakistan for four years, said Sharma.
