BHUBANESWAR: An illumination project in eight major temples of the Old Town area is on the cards to boost the tourist appeal of these temples. The State Government is making special lighting arrangements at the temples through the Orissa Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC). Funds for the purpose have been provided by the Centre under the Mega Project Scheme for the development of Bhubaneswar-Puri-Chilika tourism sector. The temples are Lakshmaneswar, Bharateswar and Satrughneswar group of temples and Lingaraj, Rajarani, Mukteswar and Rameswar and Parsurameswar. Illumination work through conventional fluorescent lamps at Lakshmaneswar, Bharateswar and Satrughneswar temples has been completed and work on the rest will begin in a month. While Lakshmaneswar, Bharateswar and Satrughneswar temples are managed by the State Archaeology, the remaining five temples are maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and will be illuminated with the LED-based multi-coloured dynamic lighting system. The OTDC had earlier sought the permission of the ASI for taking up the illumination work at the five temples. Last month, officials of the ASI visited the temples and suggested some changes in the lighting designs. “We are incorporating the changes and will send fresh designs to the ASI for approval. The work is scheduled to begin within a month,” said J K Das, divisional manager (building & projects), OTDC. Earlier, the monuments used to be illuminated through halogen lights that generated a lot of heat and there was always the risk of damage to the upper part of these structures. The LED lights, however, are cooler, safer for such important tourist structures and consume very less electricity. They also give out multiple colour lights which add to the beauty of the structures.
