CHENNAI: Chennai is planning bus-friendly corridors along the Rajiv Gandhi Salai (Old Mahabalipuram Road) following a feasibility study done by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP).Sources told Express that since Chennai is lagging behind in aggressively promoting the bus rapid transit system (BRTS), efforts are on to develop a network of bus-friendly corridors. As the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Authority is set to conduct its first meeting on Thursday, there is a possibility that officials will discuss BRTS. Sources said CUMTA could initiate action for implementation of BRTS by considering merits of the feasibility report prepared by ITDP for the BRTS proposed along Rajiv Gandhi Salai.ITDP sources said they have already submitted a detailed feasibility study on Bus Rapid Transit system. “We are yet to hear from them,” a source said.Sources said CUMTA may also study the need to rationalise the routes of the bus system as it becomes all the more necessary to remove or minimise the redundancy in the operation of bus services and could request Madras Transport Corporation to explore the same with assistance if any from the Chennai City Connect.
