New Delhi: Congress President Sonia Gandhi has expressed displeasure over a demand from a group of 25 MPs including Ajit Jogi that she take over as Prime Minister.

The demand comes in view of her massive win in the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha bypoll. They also demanded that Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi be made the party chief.

Congress MPs Jogi, Jivabhai Patel and 23 others had said in a joint letter to Sonia that "this is not the first time that the people have given you the mandate to lead them. They have done so repeatedly. Madam, we most respectfully beg you to respect the mandate and become our Prime Minister."

The MPs, most of whom belong to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and backward classes, termed Sonia's Rae Bareli victory as "a categorical assertion of the hopes and aspirations of the entire nation".

Meanwhile, party spokesman Rajeev Shukla categorically stated that it was "a move by an individual and has no backing either from the AICC or the high command".
