VELLORE: In an effort to provide better visibility to motorists and road users at night, the Vellore Police Department has installed barricades fitted with solar-powered lights and blinkers at major junctions in the Fort City. The new barricades have been installed at three major junctions - Makkan, Ariyabhavan and Mummy Hospital - Officers Lane. “Three solar powered barricades, each worth `80,000, are sponsored by a private company. It has two panels on top of the barricade that store the solar energy in the batteries. During the night, it will ignite the blinker lights and provide good visibility to the motorists and other road users,” said Superintendent of Police (SP) A Kayalvizhi. In addition, the SP also inaugurated a programme to supply lemon juice to traffic police personnel deployed on duty as per an announcement made by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in the assembly recently.T Sampath, Inspector of Traffic Wing (Vellore) said that the LED lights and blinker lights on the solar-powered barricades were visible for 200 metres. “The three solar-powered barricades are installed on a trial basis and we are likely to get more such barricades in the near future,” the inspector added. The traffic wing has a total of 61 personnel. Of them, 40 will be on duty daily. They will be supplied lemon juice twice a day - 12 noon and 3 pm - to help cool their body. “We have also distributed solar hats that are made of coir pith and thermocol padding and have holes for ventilation, to all 61 police personnel in the wing. It will help them to keep their head cool and beat the summer heat,” he added.
