Six officials of the Revenue Department were suspended here on Friday over alleged irregularities while issuing income certificates for the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Housing Scheme.
District Collector S B Deepak Kumar said the officials were suspended after an enquiry revealed that they had issued income certificates for the housing scheme without proper verification.
The suspended officials were identified as Village Administrative Officers (VAOs) Thiruvenkadam and Pichaiappan and Revenue Inspectors Aiyanaar, Susheela, Sarveshwaran and Ilampirai.
According to sources, the suspended officials issued income certificates to 11 government officials so that they could avail themselves of subsidy under the scheme.
The Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Housing Scheme is meant to provide financial assistance to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families and homeless poor who did not possess a pucca house in either urban or rural areas. Under the scheme, subsidy of `1 lakh is given to BPL families every year. The government had announced an increase in subsidy to `2 lakh but the amount was yet to reach the beneficiaries.
Earlier, seven officials of the Pondicherry Slum Clearance Board were suspended a few months ago for alleged lapses in scrutinising the eligible beneficiaries of the scheme.
