Vertuo Nespresso Machines
Check your Nespresso app. For Vertuo machines, you can check the Nespresso app to see why the machine has a blinking orange light. The reason will be displayed in the app. If you're not sure how to fix the reason the app is displaying or the app isn't displaying a reason, keep reading to see the most common reasons a Vertuo will have flashing orange lights.
The machine was not closed properly. If your Vertuo machine wasn't correctly closed, it won't brew your coffee and the light may flash orange. To resolve this, press the lever down all the way until it clicks into place.
The water tank is empty. If there's no water in the tank, the machine can't brew your coffee, and will display a blinking orange light to indicate something is wrong. To resolve this issue, fill the tank with water and try again.
There's still an old capsule in the machine. If there's an old capsule in the machine, your Vertuo won't brew a new cup until the old capsule is ejected. To resolve this, remove the old capsule and place a new one in to brew a new cup. If you want to top up your cup of coffee, press the coffee button a second time within 30 seconds after your coffee has finished brewing.
The brew unit is blocked. If the part of the machine that punctures the capsule is blocked, the machine will flash orange to indicate the problem. To resolve, open the top of the machine and make sure there is no blockage and the machine's parts can move freely.
The machine doesn't recognize your capsule. If the capsule area of the machine is dirty, it may not recognize that you've inserted a new capsule. To resolve this issue, run two cleaning procedures through the machine to remove residue in the capsule area, then try again.
There is an electronic error. Sometimes, random bugs and glitches can cause the electronics in the coffee machine to not work properly, and the machine will blink orange as a result. To resolve, unplug the machine and plug it back in after 10 seconds, then try again. If the problem persists, you can factory reset the Vertuo machine. To learn how to factory reset your machine, follow this wikiHow article.
Your machine needs to be descaled. Your Vertuo will require a descaling every three months. To resolve this, perform a descaling procedure on your machine. To learn how to descale your Nespresso Vertuo machine, follow this wikiHow article.

Non-Vertuo Nespresso Machines
The light is flashing slow and steady. This means your original (non-Vertuo) Nespresso machine is heating up. This is normal, and the blinking lights will go away once the machine has heated to the proper temperature.
The light is flashing fast and steady. There are two potential meanings for this light: your machine is either in descaling mode, or it has overheated. This is specifically for the Essenza Mini, Essenza Plus, Inissia, Pixie, and Citiz models. If your machine is in descaling mode, you can exit descaling mode by pressing and holding both buttons simultaneously for 5 to 6 seconds until the lights stop flashing. If your machine is overheated, unplug it and let it rest for 20 to 30 minutes to cool down before using it again.
All of the button lights are flashing simultaneously (Atelier models only). If your Atelier machine has all of its buttons flashing, that means the machine needs to be primed before you can use it. To prime your machine, lift the machine's lever and insert the milk frother. Then, press any of the milk recipe buttons. The machine's priming unit will push any air out of the system and prime the machine for use.
The lights are doing quick triple flashes. This means your machine has an electrical fault and needs to be serviced or replaced. Contact Nespresso customer service to get assistance. For original machines, call Nespresso at 800-562-1465.
