New Delhi: The ill treatment of a Sikh schoolboy in Rajasthan whose hair was forcibly cut was the focus of Congress protests in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, leading to the House being adjourned for 15 minutes.
There was pandemonium as soon as the Lok Sabha met over the incident in the BJP-ruled state. Congress MPs led by party chief whip Madhusudan Mistry got up from their seats saying that minorities were not safe in BJP- governed states.
Although Speaker Somnath Chatterjee asked them to go back to their seats and raise the issue at 1200 hrs, IST, the members refused and the house was adjourned.
No senior BJP leader except V K Malhotra was present at the time. Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Leader of the House Pranab Mukherjee were, however, in the House.
The incident had taken place Jaipur Monday when class XII student Indrapeet Singh was abducted on his way to school, beaten and his hair cut.
The issue has been snowballing with demonstrations in Rajasthan, Delhi and Punjab.
