New Delhi: The Delhi Cabinet on Monday fixed five years as the minimum age limit for admissions to first standard.
And in another significant decision, the state Cabinet on Monday decided that the minimum age of children taking admission to the nursery class has to be of four years.
However, the new rule will apply for admissions in 2008 and it has been made mandatory only for government schools.
In addition to this, the Cabinet has also taken cognizance of the reports of several cases of child abuse in schools. The plan now is to increase security in 300 schools in the initial phase.
Last month, the Delhi High Court had declined to consider the state government's request to change the cut off age for nursery admissions from three years to three-and-a-half years.
The bench of Chief Justice M K Sharma and Justice Sanjeev Khanna had asked the Ganguly Committee to hold a discussion with the Education Department of the Delhi government and file a report by March 31.
The bench had also refused to modify its January 17 order specifying that a child should be three years of age for admissions to nursery classes and five years for Class I as per the Delhi Education Act.
