TIRUCHY: Sewage stagnation in Ramalinga Nagar here poses serious health hazards to residents and students of a special school. Despite several appeals to the City Corporation, there has been no action.Irked residents of the area say that sewage that flows from Puthur and Woraiyur areas used to collect in the open area and was pumped out to clear stagnation. This work has been given to a private contractor. However, the motor has been out of order for that past few weeks, and the contractor, whose contract period gets over by the month end, is not taking action to clear the stagnation. They say the stagnating sewage can cause serious health hazards and even contaminate ground water. The residents pointed out that the stagnant sewage is also affecting the 130 inmates of a rehabilitation centre for children affected with cerebral palsy. “Since the sewage covers the road to the special school, the children have to be carried by their parents through the area,” Plato, a medical representative said.A Ramakrishnan, a resident of the area said, “This has been the situation for more than a year, and the sewage is more than 10 feet deep. We have to constantly alert the man in-charge to pump out the stagnant sewage and he always replies that either the motor is out of order, or there is a power cut”, Ramakrishnan added.
