SC won't intervene in Dera standoff
The SC has refused to intervene in the standoff between the Dera Sacha Sauda and the Akal Takht in Punjab.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has refused to intervene in the standoff between the Dera Sacha Sauda and the Akal Takht in Punjab. The court has said the matter needs to be resolved politically and it is up to the Punjab Government to find a way out of the crisis.

The court will, however, hear a petition on June 4 regarding protection for the Deras across the country. The Akal Takht had allegedly issued an ultimatum to the Dera Sacha Sauda, asking for all Deras to be vacated by Sunday.

The dispute was triggered by Dera head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh's alleged insult to the tenth Sikh guru, Guru Gobind Singh.

A petition filed by one of the Dera's trustees Abhijit Bhagat, who is also the vice-president of the sect, has sought protection for all the centres of Dera Sacha Sauda across the country in view of the Akal Takht's ultimatum.

The hearing was fixed by a vacation Bench of Justices Arijit Pasayat and D K Jain when the counsel for the petitioner requested the court for an early hearing.

Justice Arijit Pasayat, however, observed that issues like this should better be resolved politically at the government level.

The court also listed for hearing the same day a similar petition filed by an advocate.
